Beaumont Hospital deny their failure caused harm as they agree €1m damages for stroke injury

Case Study: March 2026

Aidan Flahavan at Cian O’Carroll Solicitors has secured a €1,000,000 settlement in this High Court case involving a delayed diagnosis that resulted in a stroke.

Our client whose identity was protected by Court Order attended hospital with symptoms of evolving stroke and requiring removal of a blood clot in a neck artery and placement of a stent to maintain the flow of blood to his brain. The surgeon ordered immediate anti-platelet therapy to prevent coagulation or clotting of blood at the stent but this was not done. As a consequence, several hours later a clot formed at the stent and he suffered a permanent brain injury as a result of the second and more serious stroke.

Our client has now lost the ability to communicate with his family and the world around him and is in need of constant care and assistance. In addition, his life expectancy has been considerably reduced.

The case was contested, with issues raised around both the standard of care and causation. Detailed expert analysis was required to establish that the failure to give administer the anticoagulant therapy made a material difference to his outcome.

The matter ultimately resolved before trial for €1,000,000, providing for our client’s ongoing care needs and future support.
