Case Study: May 2023
A Dublin-based couple suffered the devastating loss of their baby daughter, Ruby Holland, who died just one day after her birth in July 2016. Despite repeated medical attention, failings in her care led the hospital to issue a “heartfelt and unreserved apology for failings in care” when the matter arrived at the High Court in May 2023.
Cian O’Carroll Solicitors secured a settlement, enabling the family to seek answers, recognition and accountability for what had occurred. The hospital not only acknowledged responsibility for the failings but admitted causation and liability, providing the parents with much-needed validation.
This case underscores the critical importance of transparency, compassion and systemic learning in maternity care. It highlights how what might seem routine medical processes can change lives; and how families rely on skilled, timely intervention when the stakes are highest.
