Case Study
We represented a woman in her 50s who suffered devastating consequences after breast cancer went undiagnosed at St. Vincent’s University Hospital, one of Ireland’s designated “centres of excellence.” Despite acting quickly when she noticed symptoms and attending multiple reviews, examinations, and scans, her cancer was missed for more than two years.
Independent expert evidence confirmed that there were several clear opportunities to detect the disease at a curable stage. By the time her diagnosis was finally made, the cancer had spread to her brain and liver. Through determined advocacy, we secured a €1 million High Court settlement, with the State agreeing to cover all legal costs.
The case raised serious concerns about the State’s handling of medical negligence claims. Despite overwhelming evidence, there was no effort to resolve the matter before trial, forcing our seriously ill client to travel for proceedings that settled only minutes before they began. No apology or commitment to change was offered, something our client had deeply hoped for.
This case illustrates the profound human cost of delayed cancer diagnosis and the urgent need for accountability, compassion, and transparency within the health service. It also reflects our unwavering commitment to securing justice for those failed by systems meant to protect them.
