Portrait of Vicky Phelan to be unveiled at special UL event

An event will take place at the University of Limerick campus later this month to honour the life of the late Vicky Phelan, and to continue her legacy.

The Vicky Phelan Campaign and Portrait Tour will take place at the Analog Devices Building on the University of Limerick (UL) campus on November 23, which will see a portrait of Vicky unveiled and presented by a friend of Vicky’s, David Brennan.

The portrait, painted by Vincent Devine, tells the story of Vicky’s life in three panels, from her childhood to adult life.

Following the unveiling, a panel discussion will take place moderated by Shona Project CEO, Tammy Darcy, and featuring Liz Yeates, Marie Keating Foundation, Cian O’Carroll, solicitor and Caoimhe O’Neill-Forde, 221+ Support Group.

Ms Phelan was a graduate of UL, receiving a BA in European Studies in 1997.

She later returned to the University to work in the International Education Division, managing Erasmus programmes. She left this role in 2004, but in 2018 she returned again to be bestowed with an honorary doctorate from the university.

In June 2018, she was given the title of honorary Doctor of Letters.

Ms Phelan passed away in November 2022 following her struggles with cervical cancer.

She was best known for blowing the lid on  the CervicalCheck scandal in 2018, having received a positive cancer diagnosis in 2014, despite her previous smear tests coming back clear.
